The mission of JT’s Mentor Academy for Parents is to inspire parents to aspire to be great mentors for their children.
Parenting is probably one of the hardest jobs an adult will undertake, but probably also the one for which the least amount of training and preparation is provided. The Mentoring Your Child Parenting Courses are a series of clinics designed to equip parents with the knowledge, skills, and practice necessary to become wise and trusted guides for their children. The primary focus is on introducing practical parental strategies designed to teach and promote skills in our children. Our goal is not to fix problems, but provide children with skills needed to navigate through life. Each parent will decide what skills are important and works best for their family.

Mentoring your child in the 21st century is a comprehensive parenting prevention and intervention course for parents of children up to 12-years old. The course involves six-eight group sessions. Participants will be introduced to the four types of parenting styles and have an opportunity to examine where they fall on the spectrum while assessing whether their style is helping their children to thrive. Also, participants will be introduced to the origins of a mentor and assess their role as mentors for their children. Participants will learn how to develop a strategy for using appropriate praise and tangible rewards to motivate and inspire positive behaviors in their children. Also, participants will examine developmental influences which help to shape children’s behaviors and what protective factors are needed to limit potential traumatic experiences for their children. Participants will be challenged to adopt and develop an ethical approach to discipline when managing their children’s misbehavior. Also, we will teach participants how to identify and promote their children’s gift(s) and talent(s). We will provide participants with strategies to strengthen their relationship and communication with their children. Lastly, we will introduce participants to fifteen coaching strategies to promote skills in their children.
Parents or caregivers interested in:
A comprehensive parenting intervention series for parents of teenagers up to 16-years old. The program involves six (2-hour) group sessions. Participants will be introduced to the four types of parenting styles and have an opportunity to examine where they fall on the spectrum while assessing whether their style is helping their teen to thrive. Also, we will examine other factors impacting teenager’s development. Participants will be challenged to adopt and develop an ethical approach to discipline when managing their teens behavior. Our goal is for participants to develop the competence and confidence in guiding their teen through risky behavior. We will provide parents with strategies to improve parent-child connection and communication. We will offer parents strategies to promote social and emotional competence, resiliency, individuality and independence. Finally, we will teach parents how to identify and promote their teen’s gift(s) and talent(s).
Parents or caregivers interested in:
A comprehensive parenting intervention series for single parents of children up to 17-years old. The program involves six (2-hour) group sessions. Participants will be introduced to the four types of parenting styles and have an opportunity to examine where they fall on the spectrum while assessing whether their style is helping their child to thrive. Also, participants will learn the four roles of a parent. We will explore the most common challenges single-parents face and offer some suggestions for addressing them. Our goal is to prepare and equip single-parents with the tools and strategies to successfully collaborate with non-custodial parent, set up a support system, address behavior pattern’s of single-parent children, implement a game plan for managing finances, reduce stress and practice self-care, and embrace the rewards involved with being a single-parent.
Single parents or caregivers interested in:
A comprehensive parenting intervention series for fathers of children up to 17-years old. The program involves six (2-hour) group sessions. Participants will be introduced to the four types of parenting styles and have an opportunity to examine where they fall on the spectrum while assessing whether their style is helping their child to thrive. Also, participants will learn the four roles of a parenting: Teacher, Coach, Cheerleading, and Referee. We will preview and explore the crucial role fathers play in the cognitive, social, and emotional development in their children. Fathers’ will be challenged to adopt and develop an ethical approach to discipline when managing their child’s behavior. Our goal is for fathers to develop the competence and confidence in guiding their child through today’s challenges.
Fathers interested in:
A comprehensive parenting intervention series for parents who are experiencing conflict through raising children during the transition of separation or divorce. The program involves six (2-hour) group sessions. Participants will be introduced to the four types of parenting styles and have an opportunity to examine where they fall on the spectrum while assessing whether their style is helping their child through the transition of separation or divorce. Also, participants will explore common unpleasant emotions and learn how to practice coping strategies to address and recover from them. Participants will learn how to meet deficiency needs and examine factors that contribute to ACE’s and explore individual, family, and community risk and protective factors. Participants will learn how parallel parenting is different from co-parenting and explore and effective ways to manage different parenting styles. Finally, participants will learn how to problem-solve and effectively negotiate, manage, and respond properly to child-related conflict.

The Mentoring Your Child Seminar Series are designed to provide participants with a preview of the content offered during our six session courses. We will provide participants with strategies and offer tools to develop the competence and confidence in guiding their children through challenges.

We will explore common unpleasant emotions and practice coping strategies and identify ways to meet deficiency needs in children. Participants will examine factors that contribute to ACE and learn how parallel parenting differs from co-parenting and effective ways to manage different parenting styles. Finally, participants will learn how to problem-solve and respond properly to child-related conflict.
The Mentoring Your Teen seminar introduces participants to its five core principles: content, cultivation, connection, communication, coaching. Participants will be introduced to the four types of parenting styles and encouraged to adopt an ethical approach to discipline when managing the teen’s behavior. We will preview strategies to improve parent-teen connection and communication, promote social and emotional competence, resiliency, individuality and independence.
